Meet Chester
Background
His family have had many changes of circumstances within their lives, work commitments, babies and children needing their undivided attention. This has meant Chester needs have lacked slightly in recent months. Chester requires more than they can give him and would like us to find him special people to love and care for him for the rest of his life.
Requirements
Most important are people who are fit and active, enjoy the outdoors, and can give Chester more walks and stimulation than he currently receives. Chester would love to try agility, scent work, or additional training, as he enjoys mental challenges and learning new skills.
No full-time workers, as Chester can only be left for one to two hours per day. He does not settle well if left longer and will pace and bark, as he loves human company. Chester was purchased during Covid, which may explain his strong attachment and love of human attention.
We will consider rehoming him with one other dog, but you must be prepared to follow our meet-and-greet process. He is also happy to be an only dog in the household. No cats, please.
Chester currently lives with children, but we are looking to rehome him with children aged 10 and over. He would likely enjoy a more relaxed environment and can accidentally knock over younger children due to jumping.
Your garden must be very secure, and gates must have locks. If you have a deep pond, we request that it is covered. Please check that you have no toxic plants or vegetables.
Exercise
Chester has two walks per day and loves going out for his exercise.
He may pull on his walks; his owners use a Halti, though you may wish to switch to a comfortable harness later.
His recall is unreliable and could benefit from training, as he can get easily distracted while out and about. As a responsible charity, we do not recommend allowing any newly rescued dog off lead until they have the confidence and trust to return reliably.
Chester interacts very well with other dogs but can be a little deaf when called back because he is having so much fun. Not all dogs are friendly, so it is important to keep control of him at all times. Training yourself to train him would provide perfect bonding.
Chester is very food motivated, making him highly responsive to training.
Likes & Dislikes
Likes: He enjoys any playtime activities, especially fetch, bringing the ball back after it is thrown.
Chester has soft wavy coat, only sheds minimally as all dogs shed some amount.
He does not mind being brushed at home, we recommend every few days.
Chester attends a professional groomers every 7 to 8 weeks and is very well behaved at the salon.
Chester is lively and bouncy but calms down after people come into his home. Owners have tried hard to prevent him jumping up and he is pretty good but always needs some distraction in this department.
He is a very loving, cuddly dog; although he is not allowed on the furniture, he will cuddle up to you on the floor.
Chester likes to lick his humans, not all humans react well to this but we thought we we just highlight this as doodle beards can be lovely even if you do not appreciate it.
Chester is a very affectionate boy and very soppy in his character.
Chester is very food motivated, making him highly responsive to training. He has never shown any aggressive behaviour or bitten.
Chester has some playful quirks. He sometimes lays on the floor when he sees another dog and then pounces in a playful way. He also runs very fast when he sees people, which can be a bit intimidating. His owners put him back on a lead when walking in the woods, especially if children are present, to prevent accidental knocking.
Chester is well socialised but very bouncy and loves to steal food or drink. Owners lock him out of the room when people come over. They do not take him to other people’s houses because he is a food and drink thief. Training and keeping all edibles out of his reach is essential.
You must not leave any food about and need a dog-proof bin. Chester may have gotten sick from chicken, but it could also have been something he ate from bins.
Chester is toilet trained, but accidents may occur in a new environment. He has never been destructive in his home. He is not crate trained.
Car travel: He is a fair traveller. He has not been in the car often, so he may moan a little, but he settles down. With more regular journeys, he would likely gain confidence and enjoy travel.
It is unknown if Chester can swim, as he has never tried.
Chester’s owners want him to go to a loving home where he is wanted and treated with care and affection, which he truly deserves as a lovely dog.
