Adopt a Doodle

Adopting a dog into the right home is both important and heart-warming. It ensures the dog feels safe, loved, and cared for, while giving them the chance to thrive as part of a family.

Important Information

Please note that where we state particular requirements, such as 'no children' or 'no other dogs or pets' - this is for a reason. We word our adverts following careful consultation with owners, vets and behaviourists. To save both our volunteers time and your potential disappointment please answer all questions honestly.

All information provided by you in your application will be fully checked.

Step by Step Guide

1.
Browse our pooches

Take a moment to browse our doodles looking for their forever homes – each one with a unique personality and story to share. From playful pups to gentle older companions, you’ll find a variety of wonderful dogs waiting to meet their perfect match.

2.
Read our documentation

Reading our documentation is important before applying.

3.
Apply

Please fill in the form to the best of your ability. Once submitted, our team will review your application and be in touch to guide you through the next steps.

4.
Now wait...

Once you’ve submitted your application, please sit tight and wait for us to reach out — we carefully review each form and contact potential homes that best match the needs of our doodles.

5.
Home Check

We do a home-check with the proposed adoptees via telephone followed by a visual home-check by WhatsApp.

6.
Meet and Greet

A few meets are always advisable. If you already have a dog we always advise the meeting to be carried out on neutral ground, a park, field, etc. not in a home. Some have two visits with the second visit to adopt the dog, whereas others may do three visits, and on occasions, the dog will do a sleepover.

7.
Adoption Day

Once all parties are happy, an adoption date is arranged. We complete the adoption papers for the adopter to sign and return, this is also when the adoption fee is paid.

8.
Microchip Transfer

We transfer the microchip to the new owner, arrange insurance for five weeks and send the vet records off to the new owner's vet.

What to consider

By rescuing a DoodleAid doodle, you will be responsible for the dog for many, many years. Before you get in touch with us to apply to adopt a dog, please read through the following information in full.

  1. Costs & Commitment
Will you have the funds for insurance, vet bills, food, grooming plus all the equipment a dog needs throughout its lifetime? For a large dog this can be anything up to £30,00 in their lifetime.

  2. Your circumstances
Are you planning a move? Are you changing your job? Do you travel a lot or are you planning a family? If you rescue a dog, it needs your full commitment. The dog needs you to be at home with it to help them settle into this new environment and to learn to bond with you.

Time is the key factor and it may take weeks or even months for a dog to settle and learn.

How much time can you give a dog? How much training, exercise, and stimulation can you honestly provide? Will this dog fit in your lifestyle and will you be willing to adapt?

  3. Security & environment
Is your garden secure, are your fences 6ft, and is there a lock on your gate? (all these things will be required with your vetting & home check)

A new environment, new people, maybe children and another dog are all alien to a new arrival. They have left a familiar home and are having to start afresh.

  4. Behavioural issues
Can you deal with a dog with issues? Would you be willing to put in the time and effort and not give up at the first sign of trouble? Many rescue dogs come with issues and baggage, this is usually the reason they end up with organisations like DoodleAid. The issues could be minor, but could also be more significant. Issues may include anything from resource guarding and separation anxiety through to aggression and major training and conditioning requirements.
