Meet Otis
Background
Otis is a dear little chap. His owners are struggling with their own health issues and not able to give Otis the attention he deserves.
A typical young Cockapoo with bounds of energy and vigour.
Otis is a resource guarder, with strange items not his own belongings.
If he gets transfixed on a treasure, he will guard and growl.
This will need management put into place, time and patience.
Sadly his owner feels with two children, she cannot get there quick enough to manage the situation and worries that one day this might escalate further.
We would like to point out Otis has never bitten, whilst guarding items, he gives groaning and growling sounds as a warning.
Just like us, dogs can become worried if they feel that something they value might be taken away from them. This worry can sometimes lead to guarding behaviour, which is a dog's way of trying to keep their precious item safe.
We are here for support and are happy to supply a fully qualified behaviourist to help the fosters and Otis manage this issue.
Otis will bark at the window, this will need addressing, as he might hurt himself on the glass, as he gets very excited and overly alert at times.
Otis dislikes his harness being taken off, we are not sure if it’s the clicking sound.
It may also be if he knows his walk is over, or something else we have to figure out.
He is grumpy at the vets having his claws clipped, muzzle training would be a huge advantage.
Can get excited when visitors come to the home, by jumping up on them. Once settled, he is then a good boy.
Requirements
Foster folk need to be ready to commit to a highly intelligent, very active young dog that needs some extra management with his coping mechanisms.
Willing to work along side a behaviourist, to take him to appointments when needed.
To give him stimulation, more exercise and give him a quiet area to relax.
No showboating him around, for a few weeks he needs time to desensitise with you and in your home.
No full time workers he needs support in a new environment.
No other dogs in the home or visiting dogs.
He is fine with dogs outside the home, loves to interact with them.
Dog savvy older children age 13 plus (no visiting babies, toddlers or younger children).
This is purely because at he still gets over excited and as stated can resource guard at times).
No cats.
A safe and secure garden, with locks on gates.
If you have any day trips planned or holidays please state on your application form.
All expenses will be covered by the charity, but you will need to advise in advance what you believe Otis is requiring, then we can continue to go forth.
We do expect weekly updates with photos by email, just to know how things are progressing forward.
Whilst you are fostering we are here to help where we can, you are never alone.
As a responsible charity we will always get our foster dogs fully health checked, once settled in a foster home.
Foster folk are worth their weight in gold and we will give as much as support as they need, but you need to liaise with us so we can help to support you.
Exercise
Otis has two walks per day, and enrichment activities at home.
His recall is fine if no distractions, NO foster dogs should be off lead unless in a safe and secure environment, such as a dog friendly hired paddock.
This is for their safety and yours, as this dog does not know you, and you need time to trust one another.
Otis does pull on his lead, at the start of his walk, but once in a rhythm he soon calms down.
At some stage in the future, we believe scent work or some other activity he would love to take part in.
His general obedience is great, Otis 80% of the time is great, he sits, gives paw, waits. At feeding times he waits to be served and will not touch his food until you state he can start.
Note from his owner
"Otis is a very high maintenance loving dog, the reason I have had to make this decision is because I’m now in a wheelchair and can’t keep up with his behaviour, his reactivity needs to be monitored and where I use to be able to train and help I’m now confined to my wheelchair."
DoodleAid will do its upmost to find the the perfect match for this darling boy, if you feel you have a huge heart do contact us.

Otis has a beautiful curly coat, with wonderful markings.
He only sheds slightly as all dogs shed some amount.
Dislikes being groomed, needs some management.
Before he attends the groomers, his owners give him calming medication, as he dislikes having his legs and tail groomed.
His current groomers are very understanding and patient with this anxious boy.
DoodleAid is happy to seek a groomer, whom is experienced with grooming rescue dogs, and happy to help Otis.

Otis is a lovable boy, a bit misunderstood at times, very energetic and does not do personal space.

His owners have worked with socialising Otis, but it’s always a good thing to continue.
